Documentation of a cyanotype workshop for parents with children organised as part of WGW 2025

We would like to thank all children and parents for participating in the cyanotype workshop for parents with children aged 7+ on October 12, 2025, as part of Warsaw Gallery Weekend 2025!

Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing techniques, invented in 1842, almost 200 years ago. Initially, it was used to make copies of musical scores, documents, and notes. Over time, it became an extremely popular technique, allowing not only photographs to be reproduced, but also objects such as leaves, seaweed, flowers, and even entire plants. Currently, it is most widely used in artistic activities, but thanks to its simplicity, it can be practiced by all enthusiasts of alternative photographic techniques, as we saw once again at Chłodna 20.

During the workshop, we explained step by step how to prepare for cyanotype printing, and took participants on a walk around Warsaw’s Wola district, following the trail of Anna Musiałówna’s 1976 series “Concrete Desert” (“Betonowa pustynia”) by Anna Musiałówna from 1976, which depicts the neighboring Osiedle za Żelazną Bramą housing estate, and other photos from the APF Virtual Museum of Photography: Zofia Chomętowska, Andrzej Georgiew, Jan Fleischmann, Maciej Musiał, and Władysław Lemm. The photographs by well-known artists served as reference points for observing environmental changes, enabling a move from exhibition narrative to analysis of public space. During the walk, participants created compositions from elements documenting human activity, as well as floral and organic matter, in order to make cyanotype prints from them in the last part of the workshop.

We invite you to follow our upcoming events. Cyanotype workshops will be back soon!
