Can photography reject figuration and free itself from the constraints of documentary recording? This exhibition presents a turn towards abstraction and emptiness in the experimental works of photographers Andrzej Georgiew, Mariusz Hermanowicz, and Antoni Zdebiak, as well as in the contemporary works of Dominika Sadowska.
Andrzej Georgiew (1963–2016), Mariusz Hermanowicz (1950–2008), and Antoni Zdebiak (1951–1991) are figures whose archives are under the care of Fundacja Archeologia Fotografii. Each sought new means of expression and challenged conventional approaches to photography. The works presented in the exhibition engage in a fascinating play with emptiness, which these creators explored both formally and symbolically.
The exhibited works approach abstraction through various methods: from surrealist shifts in meaning to interventions in the very material of the image. Works from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s—some shown to the public for the first time—are juxtaposed with installations by Dominika Sadowska (b. 1977), in which the artist explores the boundaries of abstraction and expands the concept of the photographic medium.
The exhibition will also provide insight into darkroom equipment and the process of analog photography, offering a deeper understanding of the techniques behind the presented works.
The exhibtion will be accompanied by additional events including: a curator-led tour with PSL, workshops, an interactive photo-quest, and a performance by Maciej Tomaszewski questioning the role of destruction as a creative act in times of overproduction.
The exhibition is part of Warsaw Gallery Weekend 2024 – the largest contemporary art festival in the region!
