Archeology of Photography Foundation is happy to invite you to a hosted exhibition by Belorussian artists group Veha (veha.by).
Belorussian artists group Veha (veha.by). Collective locates vernacular photography in the central point of their interest. Archival photographs from private collections searched throughout entire Belarus, turn into a tool aimed at studying tradition, history, and collective memory.
The exhibition organized in the Archeology of Photography Foundation Gallery presents the collection of bridal and wedding photographs, selected from the impressive amount of 300 family archives, originating in various Belorussian cities and towns, the curators have been able to reach. The main theme constitutes the wreath – a headwear of a bride.
The exhibition title refers to the custom of women meeting the evening before the wedding. Women of all ages would construct a bridal wreath and take part in ceremonies which were to ensure the future wife’s well-being, happiness, and prosperity. The wreath sometimes took a form of a crown. Decorated with flowers and colorful ribbons, it reflected not only the social status of a wife-to-be, but it also remained the symbol of the transformation in social conventions throughout the next decades. Therefore, the exhibition features not only a visual tale about changing attitudes, fashion, and lifestyles. It also becomes a story about women’s fate.
The exposition presents the collection of photographs taken between 1890 and 1985.
