Wojciech Zamecznik Now – Exhibition

Wojciech Zamecznik (1923-1967), was an outstanding graphic artists, and one of the founders of the “Polish school of posters”. In his practice Zamecznik consistently employed photographs he had personally taken—transforming them in the course of experiments with different light-sensitive techniques, creating abstract records of light as motifs for further posters and covers, and including documentary photographs, taken during everyday activities as well as on journeys, characterized by an exceptional sensitivity to form.
1959-1965 was a period when links between photography and graphic art were at their most intense, this is also the period of origin of most of the works featured in the exhibition. Research on the artist’s archive, preserved in an excellent condition, has made it possible to present the subsequent stages of work on a design for a poster: from the initial phase, focused on finding the right photographic camera, to final versions that include color and typography. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with an essay by Karol Sienkiewicz and designed by Rafał Bendek. The exhibition is part of the Living Archives program, launched by the Archeology of Photography Foundation in 2011 and founded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The program includes the official award ceremony of the Zamecznik Now! contest. The award-winners include: Filip Tofil (1st award), Jacek Rudzki (2nd award), Radosław Wesołowski (1st honorable mention),  Marta Bacia (2nd honorable mention), Aleksander Czyż (3rd honorable mention). The two main prizes, state-of-the-art cameras—Smart Foto NX20 and Samsung EX1—are funded by Samsungs Electronics Polska.
